Audio giant Bose on Tuesday announced the launch of a new product called Frames. Bose Frames are sunglasses that have their own speakers built in. This pair of sunglasses can be used to stream music and other information, take or make calls, and trigger voice assistants. It is the first commercial product embedded with the Bose audio augmented reality platform.

Using features like micro-acoustics and voice controls, Bose says Frames is the tiniest, thinnest, and the most lightweight audio system it has ever unveiled.

Each pair of Frames is connected via Bluetooth to the user’s smartphone and provide wireless access to virtual assistants as well as sounds of all sorts. While the speakers are external, they’re still relatively private – aimed at the user and kept from the rest of the world with some interesting directional sound tech.

Bose sunglasses will now take and make calls Audio company Bose announced a project it’s calling “Bose AR” at this year’s SXSW festival, and it showed off a pair of prototype glasses that demonstrate what sound-based AR might look and feel like. The company plans to ship 10,000 of these glasses to developers and manufacturers this summer, with the intent of partnering with other eyewear companies.

Bose Frames are both revolutionary and practical, as per the statement of Mehul Trivedi, Director of Bose Frames. “They look and act like classic sunglasses until you turn them on. And then you’re connected to your phone, contacts, the web, and all its audible content, just like headphones. There’s nothing else like them, they’re a breakthrough you have to see, wear, and hear to believe.”
