BSNL starts first internet telephony service in India. Now BSNL customers will be able to make calls using the company’s mobile app “Wings” to any phone number.

The app ‘Wings’ that will allow customers to make unlimited calls by paying the annual fee of Rs 1,099 and by using internet service or wi-fi of any telecom operator, to any phone number. The government, last month amended norms to allow full-fledged Internet telephone services, which will enable calls from app to app as well as from an app to a telephone number.

BSNL starts first internet telephony service in India. India first telephony service app Wings – was unveiled by BSNL, the state-owned telecom firm, on Wednesday. The app allows users to place a call using an internet connection to any phone in India.

Through this app, BSNL customers will be able to make calls to any phone number, domestic or international. Before this service, phone calls on mobile apps were possible within users of the particular app (such as Whatsapp, Duo etc) and not on telephone numbers.
While Whatsapp and other internet calling apps are already quite popular in the country, Wings comes with the unique feature of allowing users to call any phone number, from other mobile networks to even landlines.

In a statement, BSNL said, “There are some areas where mobile coverage is not good, which results in poor speech quality, but internet connectivity is available through several means, including Wi-Fi. Using the internet service of any operator, the customer will be able to make and receive calls using the Wings service.”

How to get this service?

# Registration for the service will start on 15th of July, and the services will be activated from July 25 onwards.

# The service provider will be required to comply with all interception and monitoring related requirements.

# The calls will be charged by telecom operators and all rules related to standard calls will apply to them.

How will be the Wings app workout?

# The Wings service will allow calls from mobile phone to any number, domestic or international using the internet.

# The app can be activated using the internet anywhere in the world and calls can be made.

# It requires mobile data of any operator or wifi services.

# It will allow customers to make video or audio calls by paying the fee and also send SMS.

# This service will use mobile numbering scheme, provided using IP based access network of IMS NGN Core switches to allow users to make and receive calls over the Internet via their landline or mobile phone.

# With Wings, BSNL is offering unlimited audio and video calling for one year. Customers can activate the service at a one-time charge of Rs 1,099.

# International calls will be charged in line with the landline tariff, with an additional ISD deposit of Rs 2,000.

Notably

It only allows authorized licensed holders to provide full-fledged internet telephony and not over-the-top players like Google Duo, WhatsApp that allow only app-to-app calling.

Also, the app will be linked to a mobile number that will be issued by BSNL and it is not mandatory for Wings app user to apply for the company’s mobile and landline connection separately.
