A few days ago we saw reports that WhatsApp has partnered with Google and starting November 12 all our chat backups will no longer be counted against our Google data storage. So basically all our chat backups on Google Drive will be free from November 12. WhatsApp has also notified about this news on its website.

However, WhatsApp messages on Google Drive not encrypted means WhatsApp has also highlighted that media and messages stored as a backup on Google Drive will not be encrypted. WhatsApp claims that chats and media exchanged on its app are fully end-to-end encrypted. However, chat backups on Google Drive would no longer be encrypted once the free storage feature rolls out on November 12.

As notified by WhatsApp on its website recently, all the messages backed up to Google Drive are not protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption. It’s not just the messages, even all the media content; photos, video and audio files can be accessed and read by anybody who gets hold of your account.

WhatsApp provides end-to-end encryption, meaning the message a user sends can only be read by the recipient and vice versa. Further, WhatsApp guarantees protection to users from third parties trying to eavesdrop on conversations, and even prevents WhatsApp itself from reading the messages.

While the messaging platform itself is encrypted, for users who choose to back up, the messages are decrypted on your phone and sent to your drive as a backup.

How to Backup WhatsApp chats on the drive?

# Open WhatsApp and go the three dots on the top right side

# Now click on Settings

# Select Chats

# Go to the backup option

# You can see your last backup date here

# Click on it and Backup your WhatsApp data

# Select the Gmail account where you want the data to be backed up.

The backup to Google Drive is a simple way of backing up chat history so if you change devices or get a new one the data isn’t lost. 

How to remove WhatsApp data from Google Drive?

It is to be noted that WhatsApp isn’t making the backup feature mandatory and is merely an option that users can make use of, therefore users can also remove WhatsApp data from Google Drive. It means users have the choice to not back up their WhatsApp data to Google Drive.

Suppose you have saved some WhatsApp chats one year ago in Google Drive but haven’t connected your WhatsApp to the Drive since then.

Those chats will be deleted after November 12 unless you connect your WhatsApp to Google Drive again and refresh your back up.
