WhatsApp new Search The Web feature WhatsApp has officially rolled out the long-speculated feature that would put an end to fake news.

The feature dubbed as ‘Search the Web’ enables Android and iOS users to check the authenticity of a forwarded link by looking for it on the internet.

Earlier, WhatsApp had introduced double arrows to mark the messages that have been forwarded so that users can figure out whether the message that has been sent to them is forwarded or original.

WhatsApp provides a special shared in chats that have been forwarded many times.

These two arrows help people know when they’ve received a message that was not written by close contact.

Earlier this year, the company sets limits on how many times they can be sent at once to maintain the private nature of WhatsApp.

WhatsApp had also imposed a restriction on the number of forwarded messages, as per the latest rule, users cannot forward messages to more than one person at a time.

The messaging app had taken the step in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic to stop non-credible information from being spread.

Now, WhatsApp has launched a feature that would let users take an extra step to verify the messages without blindly forwarding them.

Search the Web functionality will work on the Android and iOS apps, as well as the web client. You can download the latest version of WhatsApp from the Play Store or APK Mirror.

How to use Search the web feature?

# A magnifying glass icon will be displayed right next to the forwarded messages that you have received on the app.

# You can tap on the button in the chat and find news results or other sources of information about the content you have received.

# This feature would give you an option to quickly send the forwarded message to a web search and get authentic information on it and further, prevent the spread of false news on the app. 

WhatsApp says this feature works by allowing users to upload the message via their browser without WhatsApp ever seeing the message itself.

In this way, the end-to-end encryption is preserved as the user is sharing the contents of forwarded messages on Google Search. 

Notably

The Search the web feature is being rolled out in Brazil, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, UK, and the US for Android, iOS, and WhatsApp Web users.

It is also expected to make its way to the Indian market in the coming days. You can install the latest version of the app on your device to try out the new functionality.
