The Zoom meeting app is not a safe platform for video conference, the government recently issuing a set of guidelines for the safety of private users who “still would like to use Zoom for private purpose”.

Zoom has been trending on app stores in India in recent weeks, as the use of the app has hugely grown during the lockdown, with people working from home and social gatherings coming to and, Zoom bombing has become a favorite past time of some people. 

The app is being downloaded more than 450,000 times a day for the last two weeks in India, as per news report.

The govt’s warning comes after India’s nodal cybersecurity agency, Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-in) – had cautioned against the vulnerability of the app.

The agency had pointed out that the app has significant weaknesses which can make users vulnerable to cyber attacks, including leakage of sensitive office information to criminals.

In a set of guidelines for the safety of private users, the CCC division of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) mentioned that “those private individuals who still would like to use Zoom for private purposes” –

Should follow certain guidelines like prevention of unauthorized entry in the conference room and unauthorized participants to carry out malicious activity on terminals of others at the conference.

The advisory also suggested to “avoid ‘DOS’ attacks by restricting users through passwords and access grant”.

The govt has reissued new guidelines after many users have complained about instances of leaked passwords and hackers hijacking video calls midway through conferences.

Steps of guidelines for safe usage of Zoom app

# Create a new user ID and password for each meeting.

# Create a waiting room in the app so that a user will be able to enter the meeting only when the host permits him.

# Disable Join feature before hosting.

# Allowing Screen sharing by Host only.

# Disabling “Allow removed participants to re-join”.

# It is recommended to restrict or disable file transfer.

# When all participants have joined, it has been advised to lock the meeting.

# Restrict the recording feature.

# To end the meeting not just leave, if you are an administrator.

Insecure usage of the platform (Zoom) may allow cybercriminals to access sensitive information such as meeting details and conversations.
